Greetings!

We have returned from Haiti after the earthquake.  My wife and I went to Haiti on January 6, 2010 to take part in the January 11 dedication of the completely new seminary complex where I had worked for nine years.  We took part in the dedication on Monday, January 11 and the earthquake struck on Tuesday.

We were sitting at the dinner table when suddenly the table began to shake violently.  The whole house shook.  We were 150 miles north of the epicenter.  There was no damage to any building and no one was hurt where we were.  I am sure you are well aware of the total devastation that took place in Port Au Prince.

The next day, Ruth and I started teaching the first classes in the new seminary buildings.  She taught a course in Ruth and Esther and I taught a course in Judges.  On Friday, however, the president of Haiti declared a 30 day time of mourning for the victims.  This meant that all school had to be closed.  We were unable to continue teaching.  I am not able to do the lifting required to move supplies which were going to Port Au Prince so they sent us home.

The doctor has given me permission to return to Haiti two or three times a year to teach at this point.  Things are terribly upset in Haiti right now.  200,000 people have moved from Port Au Prince to come and stay with relatives in Cap Haitian which is near where we are.  The people of Cap Haitian were already financially strapped because of only 20% employment.  This will make it much worse.  I don't know what they will do about the unfinished courses.  We will find out when we will return after things settle down a bit in Haiti.

There were three theological schools in Port Au Prince that were totally destroyed.  It does not appear that these facilities will be rebuilt.  Some of their students have already come to our school to see if they can become students with us.  There are only our school and one other, which is located near us, still standing in Haiti.  It appears that they will have a serious influx of students in the near future.  This is a very real concern as they are still very dependant upon professors to come from North America to teach the classes.  Please be in prayer for this great need.

Grateful for God's goodness to us,

Bill Cooper
