Volume 2, Number 2 -- April 1994 FROM YE OLDE EDITORS This is the first newsletter to reach you without a message from our founding President, Dr. Bill Cooper. You will miss his message of inspiration, but we thought you would want to keep up with his work. Currently, he is back in the Ukraine teaching at a seminary. You would have enjoyed seeing his excitement as he prepared to make his third trip there. Those of you who know him know that he gets excited each time he has an opportunity to teach and it is very special when he is teaching pastors. To be teaching in a land where the Christian church has been suppressed for years is such a special opportunity. Can you imagine students who want to preach badly enough that they are willing to learn three languages? They are required to learn Hebrew and Greek to study the Scripture and they must also learn English because the instructors available come from the United States and all believe time can be saved by learning the instructor's language so that he does not need to do all of his teaching through an interpreter. Bill always plans to take extra baggage with him to help the people at the seminary. Again, his excess baggage cost more than his own round trip ticket. Thanks to people such as you, he had some medical supplies, some used clothes, student supplies such as pens and paper, and a "library" for the students. The word "library" is in quotes because it will be larger than any other seminary in the Ukraine has, but it is smaller than most pastors in the United States have. The library will also include software for Biblical studies since computers are a part of the resources available to the students on a limited basis. Dr. Cooper took two groups to the Holy Land since the first of the year. One of these trips is a project that he has been working on since he began teaching at the Course of Study School at Garret-Evangelical Theological Seminary 14 years ago. He has wanted his students at the Course of Study School to have an opportunity to go to the Holy Land on the same basis as fully ordained pastors. That was accomplished on this last trip and more students will be able to go in later years. Patience and persistence has paid off. His writing has fallen behind schedule and so we are still proof-reading the second part of Genesis. It WILL be out shortly. Your prayers for his work in the Ukraine are deeply appreciated. Your financial support of Logos Ministries has made it possible for Logos Ministries to support this trip 100% The previous trips were only partially supported. The next dates for Dr. Cooper to return to the Ukraine have not been set, but will be within a year. We have already begun to gather both materials and funds for that trip. One of Dr. Cooper's dreams is to have a dental office equipped at the school and dentists from the United States spend time there caring for not only the students and their families, but the community as well. The first tools are on board and the room at the seminary is set aside. Additional tools have been volunteered and will be waiting for him when he returns. Dentists reading this may want to check as to what equipment they have that is no longer being used and could be made available as a gift to the people of the Ukraine. Perhaps you could even consider vacation time helping work in the dental office. The last time that Dr. Cooper went some of the medication that he took made it possible for a small boy to have necessary surgery. This was the first of two necessary surgeries. Hopefully, it will be possible for the second surgery to be completed this time. SEMINARS FOR YOUR CHURCH! This is the time of year that churches are beginning to plan Fall and Winter programs following the summer vacation. Have you ever considered helping your church members to learn Bible study techniques that will help them to grow? Dr. Cooper teaches two different seminars that do this. One is called: INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY and the other is:
Both are set up to be taught Friday night and all day Saturday. Other time lines could be considered for those of you close enough to Loveland to make it possible. Dr. Cooper teaches both of these classes to his students at the Course of Study School in Evanston as an additional class in the evening. The students have suggested to the Dean of the school that they be made a part of the prescribed course. He has also taught introductory sessions at the Rocky Mountain Christian Education Conference where they have been enthusiastically received. These classes are for anyone who wants to learn better ways of studying the Scripture and are not directed toward any theological bias. Students of varying age levels and study skills levels have profited from these classes in the past. The first class requires only a Bible, a willing mind, and time. The Greek class will require some books in addition. Call or FAX Dr. Cooper at (303) 669-8775 to set times and to discuss numbers and costs after he returns May 5. LOGOS MINISTRIES FINANCES The IRS asked us to file our five-year summary of income to them by March 31, 1994. We assume the next request will be to show how those funds were used for ministry. Our first book sales were in 1991 when total sales were $1,283. Our total sales in 1993 were $4,437. Our total gifts in 1989 were $3,190 while they totaled $3,375 in 1993. We thank each of you who has been a part of this either by purchasing books or by your generous gifts. It would have been impossible to send 1000 books to Africa, 350 books to Colorado prisons, or Dr. Cooper (and all the materials that he took with him) to the Ukraine without your support. The Board can help plan and help administer the work, but you are the folk who allow it to happen. Of course, there were many contributions of materials for the work in the Ukraine that do not show in the report to the IRS at this time. THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS EACH OF YOU. Everybody Is Doing It! Logos Minsitries still needs a name for its newsletter and we would like to have you help us. Of course, there will be a prize. The one whose name is chosen for the newsletter will receive an autographed copy of Behold the Brightness. All entries should be sent to: Mary F. Neil, 217 East 42nd Street; Loveland, Co. 80538 by June 1, 1994. The winner will be announced in the next newsletter. |
